When was the last time you really thought about your hospital’s scales? Most patients will step on a scale as part of their hospital visit. Caregivers record weight to track health, measure fluid retention, or calculate medication dosages. While many scales function well, overlooking your hospital’s scales can be costly.

The use of wristbands to identify hospital patients has been a standard practice for well over half a century. Handwritten, typed or printed, wristbands were originally created to provide an easy way for caregivers to verify identity at any point along the patient’s healthcare journey. From newborns in the delivery area to geriatric patients in rehabilitation, everyone got a wristband. And that’s how things worked until the introduction of barcode technology. By putting barcodes on hospital wristbands, healthcare facilities can leverage a host of connected technologies to improve safety and quality of care. It’s also the most effective way to comply with the National Patient Safety Goal (NPSG) to “Improve the accuracy of patient identification,” which the Joint Commission has included in its annual goals since 2003.

Digital technology continues to play an ever-increasing role in today’s modern healthcare systems. While 95% of hospitals in the United States have implemented Electronic Health Records or EHR, much work remains.1 Patient identification errors continue to plague hospitals and are the precipitating factor for 13% of surgical mistakes and 67% of transfusion mix-ups.2 Nationally, medication errors cause at least one death every day and injure 1.3 million people annually.3 The cost of lost lives, reduced productivity and malpractice insurance fees are debilitating the healthcare industry. At the center of every hospital’s safety program is the patient wristband, which provides caregivers access to the information they need at every point of care during the patient stay. However, not all wristbands are of equal quality. Some wristbands are not durable enough to withstand the rigors of a busy hospital environment, leading to workarounds and mistakes that, in the end, comprise patient care. H

Detecting and preventing errors that threaten patient safety is a closed-loop process that begins at the point of care, extends to independent laboratories, and then back to the caregiver. Sample identification and results reporting errors can lead to misdiagnosis and inappropriate treatment with deadly consequences. A 2006 Wall Street Journal article reported that while malpractice claims for pathology errors are relatively low, they are the second most costly. In addition to creating a serious risk to patient safety, sample misidentification creates significant financial implications. Redraws, retesting and additional treatment that result from sample errors cost the healthcare industry an estimated $200 million to $400 million per year.

The long migration to electronic health records (EHRs) in the U.S. is set to speed up with the funding authorized by the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act of 2009.  But what are the specific risks when clinicians can’t access electronic health records? How far-reaching are the consequences when EHR data is lost, or its integrity is compromised?  This paper looks at the mission-critical role of EHR systems, and introduces availability solutions that build in uptime protection to ensure the continuity of operation that both caregivers and patients can depend on.

Maximizing patient safety and improving the quality of care is the ultimate goal for healthcare providers. Doing so requires staying within regulatory compliance, while also advancing staff retention and meeting fiscal constraints. Barcode technologies provide a “virtual voice” to patients, applications and workflows. Barcoding accomplishes this by laying a solid foundation for enhancing patient identification, providing visibility into medical practices, and driving efficiencies throughout healthcare applications, and is an integral part of electronic medical record (EMR) adoption. Technology has had a truly transformative impact on the healthcare space. Thanks to innovations in technology, tools and their respective processes, the practice of treating patients has shifted from mostly reactive to proactive, enabling physicians and caregivers to approach healthcare in a more holistic fashion. As part of that shift, hospitals, wellness centers and physicians’ offices are focusing on providing value over volume1, taking healthcare beyond the four walls of the facility and into patients’ homes, places of work and social centers. The concept of whole health is much easier to attain with technology such as artificial intelligence, analytics, wearables and mobile health (mHealth) apps, to name a few.
