VMware Identity Manager provides single sign-on (SSO) to a broad range of SaaS applications, as well as legacy applications published via virtual desktop platforms from VMware and Citrix, and browser-based and native mobile apps. VMware Identity Manager also provides application provision¬ing and conditional (adaptive, or risk-based) access controls, and can be deployed either on-premises or in the cloud. In this report, 451 Research analyzes VMware’s strategic effort to bridge the legacy on-premises world (which still represents most of its business) with the more highly distributed and heterogeneous worlds of mobile and cloud computing. 451 also examines VMware’s re-entry into the IDaaS market is to extend their market reach beyond what VDI and EMM might accomplish individually.

The future of work means a new IT balancing act No matter what the work of your organization, today it’s likely done… …As much out of the office as in it …As much on mobile devices as traditional computers …And much more through cloud applications for core business activities and collaboration with customers and partners. The future of work has arrived, and with it comes a complex new balancing act for IT. On one side of the scale are high expectations for how IT can enable digital transformation and innovation in the business. On the other side is more accountability for mitigating risk, even as growing adoption of new technologies means more apps, more devices, and more mobile employees. This balancing act is driven by current challenges and trends in four areas.

Digital Business Continues to Move the Cyber Goal Posts Fortune magazine estimates that by the year 2020, US companies will spend $101 billion per year on cyber security, up 38% from 2016. With all of the money being invested in cyber security, why do the pace and complexity of new security threats continue to rise year after year? A big reason is that today’s digital business involves a more mobile workforce with expectations of immediate and on demand access to data fronted by intuitive and engaging user experiences, and often underpinned by public cloud infrastructure for increased agility and time to market.

Distributed cloud architectures will play an important role in Communication Service Providers’ network transformations. The distributed cloud will be made of numerous edge locations, from the customer premises to mobile base stations to central offices, each of which has its benefits and constraints. CSPs will need to consider attributes such as performance, availability, security, integration, and data and traffic volume to optimize the infrastructure for a myriad of workloads. Learn more about Heavy Reading’s survey results on CSPs adopting a distributed cloud strategy and delivering new services in this white paper.

Modern technology initiatives are driving IT infrastructure in a new direction. Big data, social business, mobile applications, the cloud, and real-time analytics all require forward-thinking solutions and enough compute power to deliver the performance required in a rapidly evolving digital marketplace. Customers increasingly drive the speed of business, and organizations need to engage with customers on their terms. The need to manage sensitive information with high levels of security as well as capture, analyze, and act upon massive volumes of data every hour of every day has become critical. These challenges will dramatically change the way that IT systems are designed, funded, and run compared to the past few decades. Databases and Java have become the de facto language in which modern, cloud-ready applications are written. You can’t impose controls on something you don’t own. And in today’s cloud- and mobile-oriented enterprise, no one truly owns the network. The Internet has become the one network that every corporate worker uses and that no corporate IT can control. The emergence of cloud, ubiquitous networks, smartphones and smart (or dumb) networked devices are wreaking havoc over the traditional command-and-control IT mode of operation. This shift is different from anything we’ve experienced before, because nobody owns the network.

Future interactions among people, whether enterprise employees, partners or customers, will be primarily digital and heavily influenced by mobile devices, social media, analytics and the cloud. User interactions with systems of record, such as databases and files, will largely give way to interactions with systems of engagement, such as social media.
